2017 growing season started off with an abundance of rain. More rain than we had had in many years. We had a cool Spring and that delayed bud break and bloom. We caught up with higher than usual temperatures, followed by two long heat spikes in June, which is unusual for both early timing and duration, a freak hail storm Mid-June. In August, the grapes enjoyed moderate heat during the day and cool nights, ideal for flavor development. Then a string of 100+ degree days over in early September turned the vintage into a bit of a sprint for some vintners. Our Diamond Mountain Fruit still needed time on the vine…we watched, we waited. Temperatures moderated mid-September giving the grapes the needed time to reach their full maturity.

During our vineyard walk on the morning of October 8th, we made the pick call – October 9th –  that evening the fires. We are fortunate that this fruit escaped the fires and we were able to wrap up harvest on October 17. Some parts of the valley have issues with smoke taint.  Again, we count ourselves lucky.

We are excited to share our 2017 Poggi Diamond Mountain with you. It’s a true reflection of the power of mountain fruit and … our appreciation and acceptance of the humbling power / influence of Mother Nature.
